All of us have been deeply hurt, many of us wounded. Trauma does not have to be overtly violent or sensational. For example, lack of a nurturing, loving touch for a child is not neglect, it is abuse. The effects of this can echo down a lifetime.
We respond to pain, fear, stress and abuse by constricting (i.e. we squeeze a cut, we freeze in fear). If this tightening or tensing of the muscles becomes chronic we call it holding. It should be noted that the natural elasticity of youth will frequently disguise these latent symptoms, and they will emerge with aging. Additionally, unexpressed grief will invariably manifest as holding. The problems that result from holding, whether you experience it physically and/or emotionally, are endless. Dis-ease can range from a simple stiff neck, to a total compromise of your human potential.
I developed the practice as a result of twenty years of active exploration in holistic body/mind therapy; shiatsu, somatics, Thai massage, Taoist body mind modalities, Western psychotherapy and, Buddhist psychology. I primarily employ the Rosen method. In this therapy, a client lies on a massage table and the practitioner gently explores for muscle tension or holding. Rosen method focuses on awakening awareness through physical touch, and does not imply doing something to the client. It is passive in the sense that it is very patient and allows whatever emotions or experiences to arise naturally. This is a truly powerful experience.
My own practice is not confined to a single modality. It is more active, directed and intuitive. If childhood issues are involved, I encourage the client to return to this particular place. Sometimes, the only way forward is to go back. By releasing childhood grief, it creates a domino effect in which past and future events are experienced in a healthier way.
Sometimes it seems that tragedy, heartbreak, neglect and abuse seem more the norm than the exception. Pain is an unavoidable part of life, but suffering (holding on to pain) we bring upon ourselves. The question you might ponder is how many bags of suffering do you want to carry in your journey through life?
